2020 Athens Municipal Election Information


The City of Athens will hold municipal elections this year. All cities in the state follow this same schedule:
  • Qualifying: July 7 through July 21
  • Election Day: August 25 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Run-Off Election (if needed): October 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Newly Elected Officials Take Office: November 2

Key Dates for Registration


Here are key dates for those who have not yet registered to vote and want to vote in this election:
  • Last day to establish residency: May 25
  • Last day to register to vote: August 10
  • Last day to apply for a regular absentee ballot: August 20
  • Last day to apply for an emergency absentee ballot:  August 24
  • Absentee ballots may be hand delivered up until 5:00 pm on August 24th
  • Absentee ballots must be postmarked or processed by the common carrier not later than the day prior to the election and received not later than noon on election day, August 25th.
