Your Rights in Municipal Court

What to Expect

These are the rights you have in Athens Municipal Court:
  • The right to be presumed innocent.
  • The right to be represented by an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, the court will appoint one to represent you by request, provided you qualify.
  • The right to a continuance for any good and sufficient reason. If you desire a continuance, you must expressly make a written request of the court.

Pleading Guilty

Any guilty plea you make must be a free and voluntary act on your part and not the result of any undue influence of coercion by anyone.

You may plead guilty to any offense listed on the schedule of fines before a magistrate anytime before your court date.

Pleading Not Guilty

If you wish to plead not guilty to any offense, you must appear before the Judge, for arraignment, and then may enter said plea.
