Building
The Building Department issues building permits, inspects new and remodeled buildings, and issues occupancy licenses.

Cemetery
The Cemetery Department sells and tracks cemetery lots in the City-owned cemeteries.

City Clerk
The City Clerk issues business licenses; is responsible for day to day financial data; and keeps records of city transactions and meetings.

Engineering & Community Development
The Engineering and Community Development works with landowners, developers, engineers and other agencies in the development of new residential, commercial or industrial subdivisions. The goal is to ensure that specific standards are followed for new streets, building lot sizes and public improvements (sewers, water lines, drainage, etc.).

Fire & Rescue
Fire and Rescue covers fire suppression, emergency medical care, rescue services and fire prevention services.

Human Resources
Human Resources makes sure the city follows employment regulations and laws; screens potential employee; and manages city employee benefits.

Parks & Recreation
Parks and Recreation oversees the City Park system and manages community recreation programs.

Police
Athens Police Department swore in 7 of 8 recently hired officers. Three just graduated from the Northeast Alabama Police Academy in November and the next five officers will start their academy training this month. Athens PD still has three officer positions left to fill. Sanitation
The Sanitation Department handles garbage collection, seasonal leaf pickup, and recycling.

Streets
The Street Department maintains all street signs, right of ways, sidewalks and public drainage systems.
