The Human Resource Department provides a broad range of services to City officials, Department Managers, and employees. This department is responsible for recruitment and staffing, benefits and compensation administration, personnel policy administration, regulatory compliance, training and development, organizational development, safety and health, workers compensation, employee relations, internal communications, and personnel records management.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I apply for employment with the City of Athens?
The City of Athens accepts applications for police and fire in 30 day intervals regardless of vacancy status.
For all other positions, the city accepts applications only for the jobs that are currently vacant and posted. To apply, you may download an application from the city’s website and bring it to Human Resources or you may pick up an application at:

The original signed application must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date as stated in the job opening announcement. Your application will need to be notarized before submission. We have several notaries available at City Hall.
You may apply for more than one posted position on the same application as long as you submit it by the closing date for each.
2.Where does the City announce its job openings?
The City posts job openings on our web site. The job openings are also posted at the Human Resources offices located at City Hall, on the second floor of the Athens Utilities Building.

3. Can a resume be submitted in place of an application?
A resume may be submitted with an application, but cannot take the place of a completed City application.
4. Is there an application deadline?
Yes, the closing date for Police Officer and Firefighter applications is the last day of each month.
The closing date for all other openings is listed on the particular job posting. The application must be received by 4:30 PM on the closing date, even if mailed. Once the closing date is over, applications will no longer be accepted for that position unless the position is reopened.
5. When would my application expire?
For police officer and firefighter applications, the application will expire one year from submission, provided you pass all required exams. If you fail to pass an exam, you will have to reapply. (See section on web site concerning applying for police and fire positions.)
For all other positions, the application is only considered for the particular posted job opening and is not kept on file for future openings.
6. How do I know if my application has been receive?
You will receive a post card generally within 2-3 weeks of submission.
7. Can I complete my application on line?
At this time, we do not have this option available.
8. Can I fax my application?
Yes, you may fax an application to Human Resources at 256-233-8726 by the closing date and time. However, the original application must also be mailed to us after it has been faxed.
