The Municipal Court is responsible for all aspects of the City Court System, including the docketing of cases, information concerning fines, court dates, bonds, the issuance of warrants, disposition of cases and other related court matters.
FINE AMOUNT - PAYMENTS
All fines, court costs, restitution, and cash bonds must be paid to the Municipal Court. All offenses do not require a court appearance. You may call the number above regarding the cost of the offense and whether a court appearance will be required.
The Schedule of Fines adopted by the Athens City Council is available upon request.
We accept cash, cashier’s check, money order and debit/credit cards in the office. There is a 4% fee for the use of debit/credit cards.
You may also pay your citation online, the same 4% fee applies.
IF YOU CHOOSE TO PAY ONLINE, YOU MUST PAY BEFORE YOUR COURT DATE. THIS MEANS BY CLOSE OF BUSINESS THE DAY PRIOR. SHOULD YOU PAY AFTER CLOSE OF BUSINESS OR THE MORNING OF YOUR COURT DATE, IT WILL STILL BE CONSIDERED A FAILURE TO APPEAR.
ISSUANCE OF WARRANTS
An person wishing to obtain a warrant for a misdemeanor or Ordinance Violation, that occurred within the city limits of Athens, must first file a report with the Athens Police Department and present it to the Clerk/Magistrate. Incidents occurring outside the city limits of Athens or that are felonies will be referred to the Limestone County Circuit Court Clerk’s office. As a general rule, no warrants will be issued on Thursday, due to court.

Municipal Court is held each Thursday beginning at 8:30am. Arraignments are held each Thursday of the month, except the 3rd. The 3rd Thursday is reserved for trials only. Your case must be on the docket to go before the Judge.
FAILURE TO APPEAR
If you fail to appear, for any reason or any charge, a warrant will be issued for your arrest and, if you have a traffic violation, your driving privilege will be suspended. Once a warrant is issued, a court appearance is mandatory. You must be arrested on the warrant and bond to receive a new court date. Any license suspensions with remain effective until the resolution of the case.
Frequently Asked Municipial Court Questions
1. Can I register for driving school?
If you have a traffic citation for speeding, less than 25 mph over the posted limit, running a red light, failure to stop at a stop sign, or any other minor traffic offense that is listed on our schedule of fines, you have a valid Alabama driver license, and if you have not attended a driving course within the past 12 months, you are eligible.
You will need to come into the office PRIOR to your court date to register. The fee to register is $100.00. If you successfully complete the driving course, you citation will be dismissed.
2. Can I pay my citation without attending court?
If your citation is listed on our schedule of fines and it is not a companion case to one that is not listed, you should be able to pay without appearing in court. If you are unsure or would like the amount, please contact the clerk’s office at 256-233-8733.
