FINE AMOUNT - PAYMENTS
All fines, court costs, restitution and cash bonds must be paid to the Municipal Court. All offenses do not require a court appearance.
If your offense is listed on the schedule of fines, you may pay it before your court date. Please note, the schedule of fines is FINE AMOUNT ONLY, court cost is also due. Please contact the court for the exact amount of your ticket.
We accept cash, cashier's checks, and money orders in the office. Debit/Credit cards are accepted on certain offenses. There is a 4% fee for the use of debit/credit cards.
You may choose to pay online. If you do so, it must be paid by close of business the day before your court date. Should you pay after close of business or the morning of your court date it will be treated as a failure to appear. You must have your citation number to pay your ticket online. This is on your citation and on the trial notice mailed to you. Please do not contact our office for this information.

FAILURE TO APPEAR
If you fail to appear for any reason on any charge, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. If the failure to appear is on a traffic violation, your driving privilege will be suspended. Once a warrant is issued, a court appearance is mandatory. You can choose to be arrested on this warrant and bond to receive a new court date or if you meet certain requirements you can apply for the Warrant Recall Act. Please contact the Court office for your options. Any license suspensions will remain in effect until the resolution of the case.
Municipal Court is held each Thursday beginning at 9:00am. Arraignments are held each Thursday of the month with the exception of the third. The third Thursday is reserved for trials only. Your case must be on the docket to go before the Judge.
DEFENSIVE DRIVING SCHOOL
If you have a traffic citation for speeding or any minor traffic offense that is listed on our schedule of fines, you may be eligible for Driving School. Requirements are as follows;
•You must be going less than 25 miles over the posted speed limit
•You must have a valid Alabama driver's license with no commercial endorsement
•You have not attended a driving course in the past 12 months

What to Expect
These are the rights you have in Athens Municipal Court:
- The right to be presumed innocent.
- The right to be represented by an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, the court will appoint one to represent you by request, provided you qualify.
- The right to a continuance for any good and sufficient reason. If you desire a continuance, you must expressly make a written request of the court before your courtdate. Magistrates will follow the guidelines set forth by the Judge.
Any guilty plea you make must be a free and voluntary act on your part and not the result of anyundue influence of coercion by anyone.
